General   Desktop  

~ Desktop ~
When you start your computer, it goes to is what is known as the "Desktop". The Desktop can be changed to look many different ways. The general look of the Desktop is called "Wallpaper". The Wallpaper can be changed to different standard pictures or you can use your own picture. (the wallpaper shown below is "red moon desert".
The Desktop contains Icons which when double clicked will open the associated program. On the very bottom is the "Taskbar". On the far left of the Taskbar is the "Start" button. You click on this button to see and start all your programs. Next to the Start button is the "Quick Launch" area, which is optional. Quick Launch allows you to put your favorite program Icons in it for a 1 click start.
When you open a program, a icon appears on the Taskbar showing that the program is running. The Taskbar will show all of the programs currently running. On the far right is the "Notification Area", where icons appear when an event occurs, such as new e-mail received. It also shows the clock.


Wallpaper
To change the Wallpaper, right click on the desktop and choose "Properties" then "Desktop". You will see a list of Wallpapers. You can click on the different choices and will see a preview of them. When you find the one you want, click on "Apply".

Taskbar
The Taskbar is normally "Locked", which means that it cannot be moved or resized. To see if the Taskbar is locked, right click on it. If "Lock the Taskbar" is checked, it is locked. To unlock the Taskbar, click on "Lock the Taskbar" and the check mark will be removed and the Taskbar unlocked. Now you can resize the Taskbar or even move it (by dragging) to the right, left or top of the Desktop.

Quick Launch
To view the Quick Launch area, right click on the Taskbar and choose "Toolbars", then "Quick Launch". To add icons, just drag them into the Quick Launch area from the Desktop. You can arrange them in any order you like by dragging them. To remove a icon, right click on it and choose "Delete" or just drag it back to the Desktop. To lengthen or shorten the Quick Launch area, unlock the Taskbar, then place the mouse at the right end of the Quick Launch until you see the mouse arrow change into a horizontal, two-sided arrow. When you see this, click and hold down the left mouse button and drag the Quick Launch to the length desired. Now go back and lock the Taskbar.
